Health Insurance Literacy is Health Equity
Health insurance literacy is a critical, but often overlooked, component of health equity.
For people living with HIV, access to care is shaped not only by the availability of services, but by the ability to understand, navigate, and sustain health coverage. Barriers such as complex systems, limited health literacy, and technological challenges can directly impact health outcomes.
Without clear guidance, individuals may:
- Delay enrollment in coverage
- Choose plans that do not meet their medical needs
- Experience interruptions in care
The Health Insurance Assistance Program (HIAP) works to address these systemic barriers through a client-centered, equity-focused approach.
HIAP provides:
- One-on-one support navigating the NYS Marketplace
- Assistance with programs like ADAP and APIC
- Ongoing follow-up to ensure continuity of care
- Advocacy with insurance providers when issues arise
By improving health insurance literacy, we help individuals not only access coverage—but use it effectively.
Health equity requires more than access. It requires understanding, support, and systems that meet people where they are.
